Harvest Court lasts seven days, and for all of them the king has to look both royal and happily wed. In truth his marriage is a political bargain with every bit of warmth gone from it, and his wife is the one who decides who attends him each morning. She chooses a girl from the kitchens, who takes her time over buttons and laces.

The danger lies in eavesdroppers. Nothing in this castle escapes the Queen, so each look the king and the maid exchange is a gamble. The maid is far from a trophy to be won. Sharing his bed is not her whole goal, which suggests she has plans that reach beyond a secret romance.

Worth it if: a historical-style setting, stiff courtly speech, an icy royal match and a maid with her own agenda appeal to you.

Episode 1: Getting the king ready for court

The maid enters the royal chamber and explains that the Queen has sent her to dress him, adding that no one specified how slowly. The king remarks that his wife has lent him her prettiest servant for the whole of Harvest Court, then sends her to bring his ring. A courtier labels her a clumsy wretch and volunteers to handle her, and the king warns that whoever lays a finger on her will lose the hand.

She replies that nobody has ever held back a hand on her behalf. Then the Queen walks in, telling her lord husband that court is assembled and waiting; he answers that the court will wait for its king. On his way out he asks what he would have to do to see the maid again tonight. Her reply: she will be turning down his bed at midnight, and he had better be lying in it.
