The New Girl: a guide to all 5 episodes

What The New Girl is about

Two first-years collide in a corridor, each searching for room 204, and decide to look for it as a team. Almost immediately he brings up his girlfriend Chloe, which should be the end of it. His new classmate shrugs it off and quickly comes up with an excuse to take a detour before class.

The official synopsis says the detour finishes with her locking the door of her dorm room, and class is plainly no longer on her mind. The charm comes from the situation rather than the location: a young man who keeps reminding everyone he has a girlfriend, a classmate who sees that as a minor issue, and Chloe's request to behave lingering over each scene. The mood is playful and teasing, more flirty comedy than drama.

Try it if: you like flirting on campus, a guy who brings up his girlfriend every few lines and a classmate who ignores him.

The New Girl: the episodes

The full run of The New Girl takes roughly the length of a coffee break: 5 short, phone-sized episodes, and each one stops on a cliffhanger.

Episode 1: Looking for room 204

Two students bump into one another in a corridor. She says sorry, mentions that she is new and asks where room 204 is. He is also new and on his way there, so they agree to get lost as a pair. As they walk she asks if he is seeing anyone. He is: Chloe, whose voice is heard saying she is late for her class and that he had better behave on his first day. The new girl says Chloe is lucky.

Then she remembers she has left her books behind. Her dorm is just here, she tells him, and if he helps carry them it will only take five minutes. He goes in after her and proposes that they pick up the books and leave. She refuses and tells him to sit down, because there is something she wants to show him that is not on any syllabus. He asks if she means her notes, and she says yes in a way that implies the opposite.

How explicit is The New Girl?

Episode 1 is all build-up: corridor banter, a favor asked and a door that closes. The double meanings only show up at the end, and the dialogue never goes past flirting and hints. In the premise she locks the door with no intention of leaving, so the plot is clearly moving toward cheating, and the paid chapters go further than the opener. The series is 18+ and meant for adults.

Should you watch The New Girl?

Worth choosing if you would rather have a light, comic feel than heavy drama. The excuse about forgotten books is so flimsy that the fun is watching him play along regardless. If you would prefer a girlfriend bringing temptation into the house, Our Exchange Student is where to go next.
