Harriet has a single shift left to show what she can do. The head nurse openly wants her gone, the ward is winding down for the night, and Harriet is sure the chief of surgery keeps singling her out with his eyes. Clumsy, self-conscious and squeezed into scrubs one size too small, she finds his interest even more puzzling.
The chief has seniority, a free evening once the operating theatre is done and no appetite for paperwork; the one quiet spot on the floor is the on-call room. The head nurse ends up outside, told to keep people away, an order that pleases only him. It is an underdog tale with a jealous rival on the other side of the door and a gap in power that Harriet fully understands.

Episode 1: Final night on probation
Harriet begins anxious: tonight ends her probation, the head nurse wants her dismissed and the chief keeps looking over. The chief observes that the ward goes quiet once the operating theatre finishes, and that spending the night on paperwork would be a waste. When a colleague bets the new girl will not make it through the night, he replies that she is with him tonight.
The two of them land in the on-call room, the one quiet room on the floor. Harriet apologises that her scrubs are too tight; perfect, he answers. A reminder comes in: before 7:00 the board needs his note on tomorrow's list, a request he promptly cancels before instructing Vanessa to keep everyone from disturbing them. Someone in the corridor grumbles that he wouldn't, not with her. Behind the door, he invites Harriet to tell him to stop.
